about me
After leaving school I worked for 20 years as a film and videotape editor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney and for the Department of the Parliamentary Reporting Staff in Canberra. After postgraduate studies in environmental science at the University of Canberra I was employed by Environment Australia to re-edit sections of the Fauna of Australia to make it more accessible to the lay reader. During the same period I was employed as a senior tutor by the University of Canberra to tutor scientific writing and run field classes in ecology. At the expiry of my contract with Environment Australia I found freelance work editing and writing for state and federal government, as well as editing a number of books and magazines. The latter included the National Trust of Australia (ACT) magazine Heritage in Trust.
I have extensive experience with editing publications for government departments and agencies, and have worked as a subcontractor to Biotext Pty Ltd, a Canberra-based editing and writing business that specialises in the health and agricultural sciences. I have produced a number of brochures, and edited manuscripts, theses, technical publications, and conference proceedings for clients that include the Nature and Society Forum, the University of Canberra, the University of South Australia, Flinders University and a number of private authors. South Australia's Environment Protection Authority was major client for several years, during which time I edited, wrote and designed a large number of publications.
From 2005 until 2007 I worked part time as a trainer in horticulture for ARO Educational Services Pty Ltd, a VET provider.
Other clients have included Australian Rural and Remote Training Systems (now Jigsaw Publications) for whom I edited education manuals, SA Water, the SA Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology, the SA Department of Family and Community Services, the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Viticulture, the CRC for Irrigation Futures, and the Australian Medicines Handbook.
Until the end of 2009 I worked as a staff editor for the Hawke Research Institute of the University of South Australia where I edited academic papers and books on sociology, history and philosophy. In addition I designed and typeset several books for the University.
More recently I have edited, designed and typeset a substantial book on the history of the South Australian Housing Trust and edited a number of management related academic papers for Flinders University.
I have high-level skills with many computer software packages, including MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite and FrameMaker, and am an experienced typesetter and digital image manipulator.
I am a member of the NSW and SA Societies of Editors.
